La Mirada incorporated as a city on March 23, 1960, and has developed as a residential community built around the needs of families and households. The city's official motto, "Live work play," reflects this community-centered identity. The city maintains an active government structure including a City Council and City Manager's office focused on serving residents, and has adopted a 2028 Strategic Plan addressing community needs and long-term opportunities.

One focus of the city's planning is housing—La Mirada has developed a 6th Cycle Housing Element addressing residential development and community needs for the period 2021-2029. The city also maintains multiple capital improvement projects to support residential neighborhoods and community services. Parks, recreation programs and community facilities are central to how La Mirada residents organize their lives around home, school, work, and leisure.

For La Mirada's families and households, security starts at home—both in the neighborhoods where they live and in the financial planning that protects them.
